Introduction

The COP 29 short course offers an unparalleled opportunity for climate professionals to learn with the latest developments in international climate negotiations. This course is designed for individuals familiar with the UNFCCC process who seek to deepen their understanding of critical issues like Loss and Damage, Climate Finance, the Global Goal on Adaptation, and Resilience in sectors such as Water, Food, and Agriculture, while staying updated on ongoing negotiations. By focusing on real-time updates from COP 29, this course equips participants with the insights they need to advance their work in climate advocacy, policy, and project implementation.

Throughout the course, participants will access a range of learning materials, from COP-related documents, video content and live sessions with negotiators and experts. The course’s flexible, hybrid format allows participants to engage at their own convenience while also benefiting from live interactions. Scheduled from November 12–21, 2024, with additional webinars running into early 2025, the course ensures that participants receive timely updates on COP 29 outcomes and their implications for global climate action.

Objectives:

  • To engage participants in meaningful discussions around critical topics like Loss and Damage, Finance, Global Goal on Adaptation, Capacity Building, Climate Finance,  Resilience (Water, Food, Agriculture) and Children and Youth in climate action
  • To provide participants with insights into the key negotiations and outcomes of COP 29.
  • To equip participants with actionable knowledge that can be applied to their work, advocacy, and policy engagement efforts.

Target Audience:

The COP 29 Short Course is designed specifically for individuals who:

  • Have prior experience of following COP negotiations or similar climate processes.
  • Work in the fields of climate policy, advocacy, project management, research, or capacity-building.
  • Are seeking real-time updates and detailed analysis of COP 29 outcomes, rather than introductory or foundational content.

Learning Modality:

The course will adopt a hybrid learning model, primarily hosted on an online platform. Participants will have access to:

  • COP-related documents, blogs, newsletters, and video clips: The course will compile official COP 29 negotiation texts, briefings, summaries, and analyses. Additionally, it will provide blogs, newsletters, and video clips offering commentary on the ongoing negotiation process. An interactive space will be available for participants to discuss emerging issues, share insights, and engage in peer-to-peer learning.
  • Live interactive sessions: These sessions will be scheduled based on the availability of key negotiators and experts during the course period (November 12–21, 2024). Live sessions will be offered based on the availability of negotiators and experts. These sessions will provide real-time insights from the ongoing COP negotiations, offering participants the chance to ask questions and engage directly with experts and receive updates on critical discussions around key themes. There will be around six live sessions during the COP
  • Webinars: From January 2025 to March 2025, there will be theme-specific webinars on the Outcome of COP 29 and Way Forwards on different topics such as: Loss and Damage, Global Goal on Adaptation, Climate Finance etc.
  • Self-directed Learning and Final Assignment: In addition to live and recorded content, participants will be required to engage in self-directed learning by reviewing key materials posted on the online platform. To obtain a certificate of completion, each participant must submit a reflective essay by the end of January 2025, detailing their key takeaways from the course and how they plan to apply their learning in their professional or advocacy work.

 Schedule:

  • Course Period: 05–22 November, 2024 with Webinar during the January to March 2025
  • Live Sessions: Tentative timing is between 19:00 and 21:00 (GMT+6), depending on the availability of resource persons. Participants are advised to block this time slot in their calendars during the mentioned time period.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Have a nuanced understanding of the critical issues, decisions, and outcomes emerging from COP 29.
  • Be equipped to apply these insights to their ongoing work in climate policy, advocacy, or project implementation.
